The quality of a holiday often depends on the quality of the hotel. A luxury hotel isn’t just a big room — it’s the level of service, comfort, attention to detail and care you feel from the first minute. But hotels with the same star rating can be very different. Here’s what to look for when choosing a 5-star hotel.
1. Location comes first
Even the most beautiful hotel can make a holiday tiring if it’s in the wrong place. For a beach holiday, check whether the hotel has direct beach access; for a city break, check the distance to the main sights and transport. Transfer time from the airport matters too — especially when travelling with children.
2. Room category
Within the same hotel, the difference between a standard room and a suite can be huge. Look at the size, the view (sea, garden or city), whether there’s a balcony and the bed type. For families, connecting rooms or family suites are more comfortable.
3. Board type
- Breakfast only — ideal for city breaks; you explore local restaurants during the day.
- Half board — breakfast and dinner, with your afternoons free.
- All inclusive — the most convenient choice for a resort holiday; you know your budget in advance.
4. Facilities and services
A spa, indoor and outdoor pools, a kids’ club, à la carte restaurants, a gym — these enrich your holiday. But you may not need them all: decide in advance what matters to you and pay extra only for that.
5. Read reviews carefully
Look at the content of recent reviews rather than just the overall rating: cleanliness, food quality, staff attitude. One or two negative reviews are normal, but if the same problem comes up again and again, that’s a serious signal.
6. Book early
The best rooms and the best prices usually go first. Booking a few months ahead for the summer season and holidays widens your choice and saves money.
