48 hours in Istanbul: places you must see
29.10.2026 Aviashop Travel Destinations

Where two continents meet, Istanbul reveals a new side on every visit. The city is huge, but with the right plan you can see its most beautiful places in just two days. This route is for first-time visitors or anyone planning a short weekend break.

Day 1: The historic peninsula

Start the morning at Sultanahmet Square. The city’s most famous landmarks are just minutes apart here: Hagia Sophia, the six-minaret Blue Mosque and the underground Basilica Cistern. Go early and you’ll enjoy quiet halls and short queues.

In the afternoon, head to Topkapi Palace, once home to the Ottoman sultans — the view of the Bosphorus from its gardens is especially beautiful. Towards evening, visit the Grand Bazaar: thousands of shops, carpets, ceramics and spices. End the day with the famous fish sandwich on the Eminönü waterfront.

Day 2: The Bosphorus and modern Istanbul

Begin with a Bosphorus cruise. Palaces, waterside mansions, bridges and the Ortaköy Mosque glide past one after another. Then climb Galata Tower for a panorama of the Golden Horn and the historic peninsula.

From Galata, walk along Istiklal Avenue to Taksim: the vintage tram, cafés, bookshops and street musicians. Spend the evening on the Asian side in Kadıköy — the place for local life, markets and great restaurants.

Must-try food

  • Simit — a sesame bread ring, the perfect breakfast.
  • Balık ekmek — grilled fish sandwich on the Eminönü waterfront.
  • Turkish coffee and Turkish delight — for a short break during the day.
  • Künefe — a warm cheese dessert.

Useful tips

  • Get an Istanbulkart for public transport — it works on the metro, trams and ferries.
  • When entering mosques, women should cover their hair; shoulders and knees should be covered.
  • Check opening days of museums and palaces in advance.
