Read these 7 tips before going on holiday

A successful holiday starts with good preparation. A forgotten document at the airport, a card blocked abroad or an extra baggage fee can spoil even the best trip. Check these 7 things before you set off — you’ll save time, money and nerves.

1. Check your passport’s validity

Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least several months — often six — after your trip ends. If your passport is close to expiring, renew it in advance. For countries that require a visa, don’t leave the application to the last minute.

2. Get travel insurance

Seeing a doctor abroad can be expensive. Travel insurance covers illness and accidents, and sometimes lost luggage and flight cancellations. For some countries, insurance is a visa requirement.

3. Tell your bank and plan your money

Check that your card works abroad and what its limits are — some banks may block unexpected foreign transactions. Carry two different cards and a small amount of local currency: you may need cash for taxis and small purchases.

4. Learn the baggage rules

Size and weight rules for hand luggage and checked baggage differ between airlines. Check whether your ticket includes baggage — paying at the airport is usually more expensive than paying online. Don’t forget the rules for carrying liquids in hand luggage.

5. Keep copies of your documents

Keep digital copies of your passport, tickets, hotel booking and insurance on your phone and in your email, plus a paper copy in a separate bag. If a document is lost, these copies make things much easier.

6. Don’t forget your health

Take enough of any regular medication for the whole trip and keep it in your hand luggage. A small first-aid kit — painkillers, plasters, stomach medicine — often comes in handy. For some destinations, check vaccination requirements in advance.

7. Online check-in and time to spare

Check in online — it saves time and lets you choose your seat. Arrive at the airport at least three hours before international flights. Sort out roaming or a local SIM card for your phone in advance.
